Liberty Rights Advocates Update

On May 20, a delegation from Liberty Rights Advocates (LibRA) appeared before the Ohio Senate Finance Committee to submit testimony concerning an important but ignored aspect of funding this state's prison system. LibRA's delegation was formed by LibRA Advocate Beverly Seymour, who may be contacted at druidsofdanu@yahoo.com; LIbRA member Sheila Rutkowski, happynfree1@msn.com; LibRA member Jennifer Hewitt, hjenn7@gmail.com; Ohio prisoner advocate Steve Garrett; and of course me as LibRA Chief Advocate.

Senate rules require that what is to be presented is to be submitted in advance in writing (40 copies), along with what is presented verbally with senators asking questions. You will see below what we did present in advance in writing.

Sheila, a former "old law" prisoner made to spend 13 years in Ohio prisons, had submitted a list of questions outlining costs of continuing "old law" prisoners, for consideration, but she was allowed to give an impromptu presentation which had more of an impact, her testimony she re-pieced together to share with those on this e-mail list. LibRA's presentation was passionate, effective, irrefutable, and very favorably received, with no expression of opposition from anyone on the committee. We have been asked to meet again with state legislators in the near future.

Brazil: State Security disrupts
neo-Nazi 'bomb plot'

Police seized Nazi literature, knives and three homemade explosive devices earlier this week they said were to have been set off at least two synagogues in the city of Porto Alegre, according to police Inspector Paulo Cesar Jardim.

Fourteen unnamed men were detained but released pending an investigation. They had no links to four men arrested Wednesday in a plot to bomb two New York synagogues, Jardim added.

Police have been investigating the Brazilian group, which calls itself "Neuland," since it was formed by Brazilians and unspecified foreigners in 2002, Jardim said.

Ku Klux Klan in Perth?

SPECIAL REPORT: THE feared American racist organisation Ku Klux Klan has infiltrated Perth, a senior US-based KKK leader has claimed.

Speaking from Arkansas, Thomas Robb (left), the US national director of the major Klan faction, The Knights Party, told The Sunday Times that the group was in Perth and other major Australian cities.

"We have members in Sydney, around Melbourne and Perth (and) Darwin," Mr Robb said in a phone interview this week.

His claims were backed by a former national KKK leader, Johnny Lee Clary, who quit the Klan in 1989 and is now an internationally renowned anti-racism campaigner who regularly advises US and other law-enforcement agencies about the group.

"I know that the Ku Klux Klan is in Western Australia. I know that they're in the Perth area," he said in Perth this week. The economic downturn makes recruitment easier for such groups.

"The Ku Klux Klan comes along and says, 'Australia is letting all these immigrants come in here and they're taking your jobs and the Asians are buying up everything'."

Police said they were not aware of any upsurge in KKK activity and that the Klan, like similar groups, is monitored by police.

Mr Robb denied the KKK -- which can be joined online -- was promoting violence against, or hatred of, non-whites. He blamed a few bad people and propaganda for the Klan's negative image.

Former Canadian KKK leader renounces past

The former leader of the Canadian Ku Klux Klan is apologizing for promoting views he now calls "abhorrent" and says others should "learn from my mistakes" and leave the racist movement.

In an exclusive interview, James Alexander McQuirter, who was once one of Canada's most influential racist leaders, said he had quietly abandoned his views and now sees the need to say so publicly.

"These ideas make no money for me now, even thinking about them is abhorrent. When I read or think about that time in my past, it's like reading about working people," he told the National Post.

'Runes' frighten Boobs!

There's a battle of wills brewing over "Triumph of Will" and other Nazi-era graffiti that has been seen sprouting up around the borough of late.

Police said that they are investigating the strange Nazi-runic graffiti in the hopes of tracking down who's leaving the coded messages -- most recently on the pedestrian foot bridge on East 14th Street and Shore Parkway back on May 13.

Members of the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force are on the case, although sources said that the graffiti could not be considered "bias" because it wasn't solely directed to any ethnic group.

Similar graffiti was found in Windsor Terrace, but only Nazi historians would know what the graffiti meant -- it references the writings of an author who influenced Hitler and the Nazi party, the Post said.

Police use GPS to track suspects despite murky laws

Across the nation, investigators are using GPS to catch drug dealers, burglars, stalkers and other criminals. Police say the devices, which rely on satellites to determine locations, are similar to trailing a suspect with officers but more effective.

"It's been a very good investigative tool," said Craig Klyve of the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, whose agents install GPS on cars up to 75 times a year. "The technology allows you to track and maintain a history of movements of a vehicle over a period of time in a way that your surveillance doesn't get burned and is much less manpower-intensive. It's a way to work smarter."

Privacy advocates and criminal defense lawyers beg to differ. They say the technology goes beyond surveillance and could be used to create a detailed, around-the-clock profile of one's movements. Because the trackers are so affordable, they view them as a privacy threat that could reveal one's political, religious and personal associations to law enforcement.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1983 that drivers on public streets do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy and police could place radio "beepers" in cars without warrants. Whether courts will treat GPS differently remains unclear.

Governator plans to completely eliminate welfare

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to completely eliminate the state's welfare program for families, medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students.

The proposals to sharply scale back the assistance that California provides to its neediest residents came in testimony by the administration this afternoon at a joint legislative budget committee hearing. It followed comments by the governor earlier today that he would be withdrawing a proposal to help balance the budget with billions of dollars of borrowing and replacing it with program reductions.

The proposals would completely reshape the state's social service network, transforming California from one of the country's most generous states to one of the most tightfisted. The proposals are intended to help close a budget deficit estimated at $21.3 billion.

T.I. Packs Atlanta Arena Before Prison

Grammy-winning rapper T.I. told fans he would stay optimistic when he heads to prison on a federal weapons conviction.

The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Clifford J. Harris Jr., performed for a packed audience Sunday night in Atlanta's Philips Arena less than two days before he is to begin serving the sentence of a year and a day.

"I'm going to stand up tall, head up high," he said. "Thank you for all of your support."

'Racist' parents fight for children!

WINNIPEG - In a court hearing scheduled to run all week, Manitoba Child and Family Services is applying for guardianship of a girl and boy who were seized from their home last year after the girl showed up at her elementary school with symbols used by white supremacists drawn on her body.

The boy's father, meanwhile, is fighting back, saying the seizure of his children violates his freedom of conscience, belief and association under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

"I believe that there is no legal basis for the children having been apprehended," the man, who is also the girl's stepfather, wrote in the affidavit.

The allegations of racism are not the only concern for child welfare workers. The couple is also accused of abusing drugs and alcohol, physically abusing each other and failing to provide adequate care for their kids.

The father denies those accusations as well. "In my opinion, both (the mother) and I were excellent parents," he wrote.

TT says: Unfortunately, these parents along with some others are technically right, but they are using bad judgment, which may end up with the opposite effect of driving the kids away from their beliefs.

Africa Addio'

Africa Addio' / 'Farewell Africa' (shot in 1964; released in 1966) is a documentary film about the decolonization of Africa, made by the Italian film directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco E. Prosperi. It shows like no other documentary what blacks are capable of if they get the chance. It is a masterpiece with beautiful music, composed by the Italian composer Riz Ortolani.

Probably 'Africa Addio' is the best and most exposing documentary ever made about what happened in several African countries directly after decolonization, but because of political correctness the masses never heard of it. In the USA a censored version called 'Africa Blood and Guts' was released, which was deliberately stripped from the original music and the powerful message of 'Africa Addio' - so the sensors were able to portray the destruction, cruelty, savagery and genocide performed by the Africans as a 'struggle for independence'. The directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco E. Prosperi dissociated themselves from this Hollywood (per)version of their film.

Racism's role in LA gang war rekindles debate

Federal prosecutors called their sweeping indictment of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens gang the biggest takedown of its kind in U.S. history. One of the Latino gang's primary motivations was hatred of black residents.

So-called brown-on-black or black-on-brown violence has been a long-standing concern in neighborhoods where black residents are being supplanted by Latinos. Acknowledging it, however, has political implications and officials often downplay the tension.

Pinning gang crime on race can prompt a backlash from community members. Toma said he is already hearing anti-immigrant sentiment from black residents in Hawaiian Gardens and the surrounding area in south Los Angeles County.

"That's the real danger," Toma said. "It's difficult to keep a lid on this stuff when people are getting shot."

Yehoshua Zettler, one of the founding members of a violent Jewish movement has died in Israel. His wife, Bella, another member of the LEHI movement, also known as the Stern Gang, said Zettler suffered a stroke and died last week. LEHI is a Hebrew acronym for Israel Freedom Fighters.

Zettler was one of the original members of the militant Irgun group and its more extreme breakaway LEHI faction, serving under two future Israeli prime ministers - Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir.

Wall Street causes high gas prices!

Oil and gasoline prices are rising fast as Memorial Day weekend approaches, but not because supplies are tight or demand is high. Although refiners are operating at less than 85 percent of capacity, which leaves them plenty of room to churn out more gasoline if demand rises during the summer driving season, the price of gasoline at the pump has climbed 28 cents a gallon from a month earlier to $2.33. Wall Street speculators -- some of them recipients of billions of dollars in taxpayers' bailout money -- are to blame.

Goldman Sachs & Co., Morgan Stanley and others are able to sidestep regulations that limit investments in commodities such as oil, and they're investing on behalf of pension funds, endowments, hedge funds and other big institutional investors, in part as 'a hedge against rising inflation'.

Morgan Stanley didn't respond to requests for comment via e-mail and telephone. "Goldman Sachs declines to comment for your story," spokesman Michael DuVally said.

There are no limits in derivatives markets. Vast unregulated markets involve private contracts between swaps dealers -- usually big Wall Street banks -- and large investors. These dark markets, also called over-the-counter markets, are 10 times larger than the futures market, and they have no position limits and no regulation.
