The Bubble
How homeowners, speculators and Wall Street dealmakers rode a wave of easy money with crippling consequences.
The black-tie party at Washington's swank Mayflower Hotel seemed a fitting celebration of the biggest American housing boom since the 1950s: filet mignon and lobster, a champagne room and hundreds of mortgage brokers, real estate agents and their customers gyrating to a Latin band.
On that winter night in 2005, the company hosting the gala honored itself with an ice sculpture of its logo. Pinnacle Financial had grown from a single office to a national behemoth generating $6.5 billion in mortgages that year. The $100,000-plus party celebrated the booming division that made loans largely to Hispanic immigrants with little savings. The company even booked rooms for those who imbibed too much.
Kevin Connelly, a loan officer who attended the affair, now marvels at those gilded times. At his Pinnacle office in Virginia, colleagues were filling the parking lot with BMWs and at least one Lotus sports car. In its hiring frenzy, the mortgage company turned a busboy into a loan officer whose income zoomed to six figures in a matter of months.
"It was the peak. It was the embodiment of business success," Connelly said. "We underestimated the bubble, even though deep down, we knew it couldn't last forever."
Indeed, Pinnacle's party would soon end, along with the nation's housing euphoria. The company has all but disappeared, along with dozens of other mortgage firms, tens of thousands of jobs on Wall Street and the dreams of about 1 million proud new homeowners who lost their houses.
The aftershocks of the housing market's collapse still rumble through the economy, with unemployment rising, companies struggling to obtain financing and the stock market more than 10 percent below its peak last fall. The Federal Reserve has taken unprecedented action to stave off a recession, slashing interest rates and intervening to save a storied Wall Street investment bank. Congress and federal agencies have launched investigations into what happened: wrongdoing by mortgage brokers, lax lending standards by banks, failures by watchdogs.
Seen in the best possible light, the housing bubble that began inflating in the mid-1990s was "a great national experiment," as one prominent economist put it -- a way to harness the inventiveness of the capitalist system to give low-income families, minorities and immigrants a chance to own their homes. But it also is a classic story of boom, excess and bust, of homeowners, speculators and Wall Street dealmakers happy to ride the wave of easy money even though many knew a crash was inevitable.

Disgraced rabbi fights sexual allegations
NEW YORK (JTA) -- Rabbi Mordechai Gafni acknowledged his "sickness" in 2006 after several students at his Israeli institute claimed they were lured into sexual liaisons through deception and psychological manipulation. For decades Gafni had been dogged by claims he engaged in improper sexual activities, including allegations that he molested two teenage girls.
Based in Salt Lake City, Gafni, now known as Marc, is a practitioner of a Kabbalah-inspired philosophy called evolutionary spirituality.

Born as Marc Winiarz, Marc Gafni changed his name several times using multiple spellings. Winiarz is also known as Mordechai Winiarz, Marc Gafni, Mordechai Gafni and or Marc Israel.
Winiarz/Gafni/Israel grew up in the midwest, yet went to both high school and college in New York. After college he became a Rabbinical student at Yeshiva University, yet did not get his rabbinical ordination (smeicha) from YU. Instead, Mordechai Gafni obtained his ordination from Rabbi Shlomo Riskin.
In 2004, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, the spiritual leader of the Israeli community of Efrat, was going to revoke the rabbinic ordination he gave Rabbi Winiarz/Gafni many years ago when they had a close rabbi-student relationship. When Gafni heard of Rabbi Riskin's wishes, he wrote a letter "returning" his semicha to spare his former teacher any further embarrassment.
Winiarz ran an organization called JPSY (Jewish Public School Youth). It was funded by such major Jewish philanthropists as Mark Belzberg and Michael Steinhardt (who seemed impressed by Winiarz).
The central character of Mario Puzo's The Godfather was "Vito Corleone" (played in the movie by Marlon Brando). Don Corleone was modeled after a real-life Mob boss, Vito Genovese, who headed the Genovese Crime Family. Other figures from this family include Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Frank Costello, Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky* ("Hyman Roth" in Godfather II), and Vincent "Jimmy Blue Eyes" Alo.
The Genovese Crime Family had a fence named Solomon Frank "Red" Steinhardt, who was arrested in 1958 on charges of buying and selling stolen jewelry. In fact the prosecutor at Red Steinhardt's trial, Frank Hogan, described Red Steinhardt as "the biggest Mafia fence in America." Red was sentenced to 5-10 years on each of two charges of fencing, and served several years at Sing Sing, a prison just north of New York City.
While in prison, Red Steinhardt put his son Michael through the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. When Michael Steinhardt finished Wharton in 1967 he started an early hedge fund, "Steinhardt, Fine, Berkowitz & Co." As Michael later revealed in his book, much of the money that went into his hedge fund was cash from Steinhardt's father and his "associates". Thus, Michael Steinhardt's hedge fund was a conduit by which Mob cash passed into Wall Street (one former prosecutor shared with me an elegant phrase a Mafia suspect used under interrogation: "Yeah, in da 70's weeze went from concrete to Wall Street").
In the early 1970's Steinhardt was a close financial associate of an international oil trader and general bon vivant named Marc Rich.
From his start in the early 1970's, Steinhardt's reputation was always that of a hater, an in-your-face profanity-laced screamer of unprecedented proportions. Nothing I have ever seen from Hollywood captures the way I have seen it occur in reality on Wall Street, yet in that environment, Steinhardt's verbal brutality towards others, including towards his subordinates, became the stuff of legend.
The other technique Steinhardt pioneered in the 1970's was an extremely aggressive trading style centering upon, "The Edge." What "The Edge" means is "information asymmetry." One person who worked at a major brokerage covering Steinhardt described to me their first encounter, decades ago: "We came out with a downgrade on a stock, I think it was GM. Minutes later I got a call from Steinhardt. 'You fucking asshole,' he said. 'Why didn't I know about this thirty minutes ago?'" (In other words, Steinhardt was demanding to know why he had not been tipped off to the coming downgrade.) "I told him, 'Come on Mr. Steinhardt. You know that would be illegal. You know I can't do that.' Steinhardt told me, 'You dumb fucking kid, you know the way the game is played. You look at how much vig I pay your firm each month and you tell me that.'" (Another Wall Street money manager who worked in these circles tells me, "Steinhardt always liked to get what he called, 'fancy information.' You know, analysts' upgrades and downgrades, before the market got them. Steinhardt would tell them, "You want my business? You gotta get me some fancy information. That's how you win my business.")
In the early 1980's Steinhardt's buddy Marc Rich turned out to be a traitor who was secretly doing oil business with Libya and Iran in violation of a number of US laws. This was a felony, as were the tax evasion schemes by which he hid his profits (Time: "The Marc Rich Case: A Primer"). Marc Rich the Traitor fled the United States with his associate "Pinky" Green for Zug, Switzerland, where he would become the most notorious fugitive financier since Nixon's friend Robert Vesco (Slate: "Know Your Fugitive Financiers"). His present net worth is estimated at $1.2 billion (it is also uncertain as to whether he is or is not a US citizen, as for years he has neither paid US taxes nor renounced his citizenship).
Steinhardt morphed his hedge fund into a solo act: "Steinhardt Partners." He also morphed politically: originally a Goldwater Republican, in the 1980's Steinhardt played a leading role in the development of the new "Democrat Leadership Council," and became its chairman in 1985. The DLC is the centrist Democrat group out of which Bill Clinton emerged onto the national stage. This brought him into close proximity with Marty Peretz, who parlayed his skill in marrying a Singer Sewing Machine heiress into becoming publisher of The New Republic (which I believe he has since sold, though he retains editorial control).
[Under pressure from Steinhardt], on his last morning in the White House, Bill
Clinton pardoned [money-launderer and Mossad agent] Marc Rich. Bill was
unusually close-mouthed about his reasons, saying only that he had become
"impressed" with the case for pardoning Marc Rich. How that "case" was presented
(or on what size check) is something that Clinton archivists refused to release
to the press just last week, seven years after the events in question.
Jim Cramer, the television personality, publicly emphasizes his career at Goldman Sachs followed by his time spent running his own hedge fund. In truth, however, as soon as he left Goldman Sachs, Jim Cramer spent 1-2 years ensconced in Steinhardt's offices at the Burroughs Building in Manhattan. Cramer housed in Steinhardt Partners and his office was three doors down from Michael Steinhardt's.

AMA to apologize to black doctors for racism
CHICAGO - The American Medical Association is issuing a formal apology for more than a century of discriminatory policies that excluded blacks from participating in a group long considered the voice of U.S. doctors.
The apology stems from initiatives at the nation's largest doctors' group to reduce racial disparities in medicine - from the paltry number of black physicians to the disproportionate burden of disease among blacks and other minorities.
It comes more than 40 years after AMA delegates denounced policies at state and local medical societies dating to the 1800s that barred blacks.
For decades, AMA delegates resisted efforts to get them to speak out forcefully against discrimination or to condemn the smaller medical groups that historically have had a big role in shaping AMA policy.
The apology being issued Thursday might seem belated, but it isn't the AMA's first for its discriminatory history. Dr. John Nelson, then AMA's president, offered a similar apology at a 2005 meeting on improving health care and eliminating disparities, sponsored by the government's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
That came a year after the AMA joined the National Medical Association, a black doctors' group, and other minority doctors' groups in forming the Commission to End Health Care Disparities.
The commission has been working on raising awareness of health disparities, including disproportionate rates of many diseases among blacks and other minorities.
The new apology is a more formal acknowledgment of the AMA's embarrassing past, and is also part of the AMA's efforts to improve an image that in recent years has lost its luster. In many circles, the AMA is seen as a stodgy trade group focused on doctors' rather than patients' best interests.
Many black physicians applauded the AMA's move.
"It is true that what the AMA did historically was awful," said Dr. Otis Brawley, the American Cancer Society's chief medical officer. "There were AMA local chapters that actually had rules against black members well into the late 1960s, and policies that made blacks not feel comfortable well into the 1980s."
Brawley, who is black, said he's never been an AMA member, but that the apology "certainly makes me much more interested in working with them." Dr. Monica Peek, a Chicago internist and member of the AMA and National Medical Association, said the apology "creates an open and healthy dialogue for addressing these issues" that black doctors have long been aware of.
But she said AMA's actions don't lessen the need for a separate group representing black doctors.
Addressing health disparities hasn't always been a part of AMA's mission "but it's something that has never been off of NMA's radar," Peek said.

Who Planned the Anthrax Attacks?
It's the $5,800,000 question
The FBI's non-investigation of this heinous and sinister crime was a joke from the beginning: after all, since when do FBI probes have official names, and why such a silly one as "Amerithrax"? Such brazen corniness has about it an unmistakable Keystone Kops air, which was certainly evident throughout the long-playing media circus that will evermore be known as the persecution of Steven J. Hatfill.
The answer is not really a mystery, since all the facts are on the public record, but I'll reiterate them here in case you aren't familiar with my past writings on this fascinating subject.
Just before the anthrax letters became public knowledge but after they'd been mailed, military police headquarters at Quantico, Virginia, received a letter that accused an Arab scientist who once worked at the USAMRID facility, a biowarfare lab at Ft. Detrick, of being a terrorist about to unleash biological warfare against civilian targets in the U.S.
The author of this anonymous missive claimed to have been one of the scientist's former co-workers, and appeared to have a detailed knowledge of Assaad's career and daily routine. When the anthrax letters were opened, the FBI paid a visit to Dr. Ayaad Assaad, a former Ft. Detrick employee, and questioned him extensively.
The FBI cleared Assaad of any connection to the anthrax letters early on, but then seemed to have let this significant clue grow quite cold, failing to follow up on it until the winter of 2004, when they launched an investigation into the Quantico letter. It seems clear that whoever sent that letter had at least foreknowledge of the anthrax attacks, and discovering the writers' identity could certainly lead us to the source of the attacks. Yet for years the FBI did nothing: instead, they chased Hatfill around, following him everywhere, blackening his name -- and diverting attention away from the only hard evidence that has so far surfaced in this baffling case.
Dr. Assaad, an Egyptian-born biologist who worked at USAMRID in the early 1990s, was the target of a hateful harassment campaign that became the subject of a federal lawsuit later settled out of court. The defendants in the suit were a group of USAMRID employees who targeted Assaad by sending him anti-Arab missives -- including a rubber camel outfitted with a sex toy -- and composed poems that they left on his desk. An account in the Courant depicts the bizarre atmosphere in which U.S. government scientists worked on toxins powerful enough to kill off entire populations:
"Assaad said he was working on the Saturday before Easter 1991, just after the Persian Gulf War had ended, when he discovered an eight-page poem in his mailbox. The poem, which became a court exhibit, is 47 stanzas -- 235 lines in all, many of them lewd, mocking Assaad. The poem also refers to another creation of the [KikeJew 'Camel Club'] scientists who wrote it -- a rubber camel outfitted with all manner of sexually explicit appendages.
The ideological flavor of the [KikeJew] Camel Club's jibes isn't too hard to fathom: they sound just like the participants in the hate-fest over at Little Green Footballs, or, come to think of it, the editorial board of the Weekly Standard.
The anthrax-laden letters read "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," and invoked the name of Allah. Clearly this wasn't just an attempt to set up a particular Arab, Dr. Assaad, but to finger all Arab-Americans, and Muslims, as potential terrorists -- weeks after bin Laden and his boys downed the World Trade Center and took out the Pentagon.
The trail that leads us to the perpetrators of the anthrax letter terrorist attacks ends at Ft. Detrick, where the [KikeJew] "Camel Club" held court.
In settling with Hatfill for mega-bucks, the U.S. government isn't officially admitting any wrongdoing, -- and we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for anything like an apology -- but clearly something was going on behind the scenes that looks very much like obstruction of the investigation. Of course it's easy for a libertarian like me to scoff at the inefficiencies of government agencies: that's comes with the territory -- and is, furthermore, a well-known fact. Yet there seems something a bit more dicey than mere incompetence at work here.
The Fallacy of Multiculturism
There are people who are predicting that in 100 years all humans will have olive toned skin and dark hair. It's ironic how the people who are much in favour of such a development are often the same people who get all upset if someone suggests a one state solution to the Palestine problem.
So what's the problem with multiculturism? After all, Its promoters do support cultural diversity. They want the different ethnic groups of a society to preserve their cultural identity and not - as it used to be the case in many Western societies - the larger group absorbing the smaller ones. At first sight this looks like a nice idea. Who likes to be pressured to give up his cultural identity, unless he perceives it to be inferior to the adopted one?
But that's not what multiculturism is all about. In fact, when you look back in human history, multiculturism has always been a tool of oppression, not - the way it is being sold to us by our ruling crime families - as a means of preventing it.
Divide and rule
Just remember how small countries like Britain were able to rule their vast empires. They divided them into manageable units and then used one ethnic group inside that unit to oppress the others. They were very clever how they went about it. Not only did they give those collaborators privileges over the oppressed subjects. They also made use of traditional rivalries between neighbouring ethnic groups, giving the previously oppressed an opportunity to pay back their traditional foes.
The British, who perfected this system of 'divide and rule', used to draw the borders of their colonies deliberately in a way that there was a minority willing to oppress the majority. If that wasn't possible - like in the case of Malaysia or Hong Kong - they imported people of a different ethnicity from another colony. As a rule of thumb for every English colonial officer there used to be 50 'ethnic' soldiers from a local minority or imported ethnic groups.

Wife of police chief chases down husband
The wife of a Florida police chief is in custody today after officials say she chased her husband with a gun, firing multiple shots.
Eleanor Adderley, 45, the wife of Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley, is being held without bail in the Broward County jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting a missile into a dwelling, vehicle or building.
According to police in Plantation, Fla., where the couple lived, Mrs. Adderley confronted her husband as he lay in bed Tuesday and then, "without provocation," fired a shot into the mattress.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the woman chased him to a neighbor's house, firing several more shots, eventually giving up the gun.
The Senate on Wednesday affirmed its intention to protect from civil lawsuits telecom companies that helped the government wiretap Americans without court authorization after the Sept. 11 attacks.
It turned back three amendments that were offered during final debate on a bill that overhauls the rules on secret government eavesdropping.
The votes suggest the surveillance bill will pass by an easy margin later Wednesday, and signal an end to almost a year of wrangling between the House and Senate, Democrats and Republicans, and Congress and the White House over the president's warrantless wiretapping program.
The House approved the surveillance overhaul last month.

Salmonella infects over 1,000
Peppers now eyed
WASHINGTON - More than 1,000 people now have become ill from salmonella initially linked to raw tomatoes, a sobering milestone Wednesday that makes this the worst foodborne outbreak in at least a decade. Adding to the confusion, the government is warning certain people to avoid types of hot peppers, too.
Certain raw tomatoes - red round, plum and Roma - remain a chief suspect and the government stressed again Wednesday that all consumers should avoid them unless they were harvested in areas cleared of suspicion.
But people at highest risk of severe illness from salmonella also should not eat raw jalapeno and serrano peppers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged Wednesday. The most vulnerable are the elderly, people with weak immune systems and infants.
Raw jalapenos caused some of the illnesses, conclude CDC investigations of two clusters of sick people who ate at the same restaurant or catered event.

TM: From the beginning, the South was overwhelmingly against using Negroes as soldiers and for good reason. Firstly, the Confederacy did not have the resources to train, arm and feed Negro regiments. Secondly, Negroes were not capable of being good fighters. Union Negro soldiers were for the most annihilated at Fort Wagner, Fort Pillow and Brices Crossroads. I do not believe Negroes in the South would have performed any better. A draw would have been a win for the Confederacy.

Apologists Outraged Over Wal-Mart Racist Mestizo Books

June 30, 2005: AP (Associated Pricks) - A mestizo comic book containing a character that the White House once denounced as an "offensive racial stereotype" is again at the center of controversy after being sold at Houston-area Wal-Mart stores.
Negro and White apologist shoppers are upset that the comics depicting Memin Pinguin, a black cartoon character drawn with "exaggerated" (Step'N Fetchet) features, such as thick boot lips and wide-open scared eyes, are being sold near the African-American book section, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The cartoon character first made national headlines in 2005, when the Mexican government issued five stamps commemorating the character. His negroid appearance, speech and mannerisms are the subject of kidding by white characters in the comic book. This stereotypical persona of negroes was a comic prop used by the Hymiewood Jews in the 1930's and 40's in their motion picture films to make White as well as black people laugh, but when the Step'N Fetchet and Mantan Moreland characters became politically incorecct by the early 1950's, these same Hymiewood Jews denounced these true-to-life negro characterizations as "highly exaggerated negro stereotypes that offend men and woman of all skin color" as stated by the late and former (reformed) blackface performer Eddie Cantor.
Those postage stamps prompted then White House press secretary Scott "Scooter" McClellan to take the country to task. "Racial stereotypes are offensive (but funny) (lol) no matter what their origin," McClellan said in 2005. "The Mexican government needs to take this into account. Images like these have no place in today's world."
Houston shopper negress Shawnedria McGinty told the Chronicle that she asked a store manager "to take them goddamn motherfuckers out of this place" when she saw them over the weekend. He complied.
"I said, 'wait a minute: Is this a monkey or little nigger boys?'" McGinty, 34, of Meyerland, Texas, told the paper. "I was so upset. This is 2008."
Another Houston resident, Quanell X, demanded Wal-Mart apologize for selling the books. "Even Hispanics of "conscious minds" sense this is racist and that to sell this is totally unacceptable," he told the Chronicle. "It is a disgrace man - it's an insult to all us black-ass motherfuckers."
A Wal-Mart spokesman told the paper that the comics were removed from one location, but wouldn't say if they'd be pulled from all stores. "We will be evaluating the best course of action," said 'visibly shaken' Phillip Keene, a company spokesman.

Thirty-six years ago when NPG started to sound the alarm about America's rapidly escalating population, no one foresaw the collapse of our nation's immigration system and how it would throw our future population projections totally out-of-whack. Today, it is almost impossible to say how many millions of illegal immigrants currently reside in our country - and how many more arrive each day. Sadly, what should be an all-out war to solve the immigration crisis has evolved into a political stalemate where hordes of powerful special interests have a stake in making sure the problem is not resolved. One thing is for sure: The solution to our nation's immigration problems doesn't lie totally in Washington, D.C.

The European Parliament took action last month to better confront one of its growing problems - illegal aliens who won't go home. The Associated Press reports that the new ideas contain measures for long detention periods and create a common policy to replace the differing practices currently being carried out by the 27 nation-bloc.
According to the AP, "Under the new guidelines, already approved by EU governments, illegal aliens can be held in specialized detention centers - not jails - for up to 18 months before being expelled. But EU countries must provide them basic rights, including access to free legal advice, and unaccompanied children or families with children should be held only as a last resort."

Sugar. It is something that comes disguised as a most pleasant tasting food, that, like Christianity, even your sweet, loving mother would administer to you by the bushel. That narcotic is sugar - ordinary, refined, crystalline, white sugar you buy at any grocery store.
Sugar a narcotic? Yes, sugar is a narcotic - an unnatural substance produced by industrial processes (mostly from sugar cane or sugar beets) by refining it down to pure sucrose, after stripping away all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes and other beneficial nutrients. What is left is a concentrated unnatural narcotic which the human body is not able to handle, at least not in anywhere near the quantities that is now ingested in today's accepted lifestyle.
White Sugar, White Flour. When I was a kid I grew up on a farm in Canada. Now you would think that anybody growing up on a farm would get an ample supply of fresh wholesome food. However, due to our ignorance about nutrition (shared by 99% of the White Race) we would every so often load up with a 100-pound sack of white flour and a 100 pound sack of white sugar, and store them in the upstairs pantry. Both of these "foods" are extremely detrimental to anyone's health, and even rats, who are more hardy than humans, will die in short order if they are fed on a menu of white flour, white sugar, or both.
Sugar Addictive. The average American now consumes approximately 115 lbs. of sugar per year. This is per man, woman and child. The biggest reason sugar does more damage than any other poison, drug or narcotic is twofold: (a) It is considered a "food" and ingested in such massive quantities, and (b) The damaging effects begin early, from the day a baby is born and is fed sugar in its formula. Even mothers milk is contaminated with it. (c) Practically 100% of our civilized White Racial Comrades are addicted to it throughout their lifetime from the cradle to the grave. The only exceptions are those few (but growing numbers) who have become aware of what a deadly poison is common household sugar. Top Toyota Engineer Died From Overwork
TOKYO (July 9) - A Japanese labor bureau has ruled that one of Toyota Motor Corp.'s top car engineers died from working too many hours, the latest decision against overwork in Japan, where stoic acceptance of extended overtime has long been the norm.
The man who died was aged 45 and had been under severe pressure as the lead engineer in developing a hybrid version of Toyota's blockbuster Camry line, said Mikio Mizuno, the lawyer representing his wife. His identity is being withheld at the request of his family, who continue to live in Toyota City where the company is based.

HAMAS PREPARING TO POUNCE
IDF sources have warned Western Negev municipal leaders that Hamas is preparing to renew its rocket attacks - and that it has the wherewithal to do so with fury.
The current ceasefire has held, more or less, for three weeks, but it is not expected to last for a long time. Hamas and other Gaza terrorists have fired an average of two shells or rockets at Israel every three days.
Hamas overthrew Fatah control of Gaza in June of last year, and was able to amass at least 230 tons of explosives, 30,000 rifles, over six million rounds of ammunition, and scores of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles by the time they had been in power just six months. Many military experts have warned that Hamas is using the ceasefire period to amass a tremendous arsenal of weapons and explosives, for use against Israel when the time is ripe.
In the meantime, Hamas continues to "drip-drop" mortar shells and rockets at Israel, with the goal of getting Israel used to a situation in which Hamas is "allowed" to respond to perceived Israeli violations of the ceasefire.
Analyst Yehonatan D. HaLevi says that Hamas uses "subcontractors" - small terrorist groups seemingly unlinked to Hamas - to fire many of the rockets is designed, so as to distance the ruling terror organization from official responsibility. Members of the Hamas leadership are afraid of an Israeli response at them personally, and some of them have gone into hiding for various durations of time.
This morning (Thursday), the ceasefire's first fatality was registered, when IDF soldiers shot and killed a Gaza Arab as he attempted to cross the security barrier near the Kissufim crossing. Though he was not armed, he ignored repeated warnings to stop, and was finally shot in accordance with IDF guidelines.

Atheist soldier sues Army for discrimination
KANSAS CITY, Kansas -- Army Spc. Jeremy Hall was raised Baptist.
Like many Christians, he said grace before dinner and read the Bible before bed. Four years ago when he was deployed to Iraq, he packed his Bible so he would feel closer to God. He served two tours of duty in Iraq and has a near perfect record. But somewhere between the tours, something changed. Hall, now 23, said he no longer believes in God, fate, luck or anything supernatural.
Hall said he met some atheists who suggested he read the Bible again. After doing so, he said he had so many unanswered questions that he decided to become an atheist. His sudden lack of faith, he said, cost him his military career and put his life at risk. Hall said his life was threatened by other troops and the military assigned a full-time bodyguard to protect him out of fear for his safety.
In March, Hall filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, among others. In the suit, Hall claims his rights to religious freedom under the First Amendment were violated and suggests that the United States military has become a Christian organization.
"I think it's utterly and totally wrong. Unconstitutional," Hall said.
Hall said there is a pattern of discrimination against non-Christians in the military. Two years ago on Thanksgiving Day, after refusing to pray at his table, Hall said he was told to go sit somewhere else. In another incident, when he was nearly killed during an attack on his Humvee, he said another soldier asked him, "Do you believe in Jesus now?"
Hall isn't seeking compensation in his lawsuit -- just the guarantee of religious freedom in the military. Eventually, Hall was sent home early from Iraq and later returned to Fort Riley in Junction City, Kansas, to complete his tour of duty. He also said he missed out on promotions because he is an atheist.
"I was told because I can't put my personal beliefs aside and pray with troops I wouldn't make a good leader," Hall said.
Michael Weinstein, a retired senior Air Force officer and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, is suing along with Hall. Weinstein said he's been contacted by more than 8,000 members of the military, almost all of them complaining of pressure to embrace evangelical Christianity.
"Our Pentagon, our Pentacostalgon, is refusing to realize that when you put the uniform on, there's only one religious faith: patriotism," Weinstein said.
Weinstein said he doesn't buy it [BS] and points to a promotional video by a group called Christian Embassy. The video, which shows U.S. generals in uniform, was shot inside the Pentagon. Senate OKs FISA Bill, Immunity For Telecom Firms
The Democratic-led Congress and Republicans this afternoon voted to put an end to the NSA spying scandal by approving a bill to immunize lawbreaking telecoms, terminate all pending lawsuits against them, and vest whole new warrantless eavesdropping powers in the President.
The vote in favor of the new FISA bill was 69-28. Barack Obama joined every Senate Republican (and every House Republican other than one) by voting in favor of it, while his now-vanquished primary rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, voted against it. The bill will now be sent to an extremely happy George Bush, who already announced that he enthusiastically supports it, and he will sign it into law very shortly.

Hey TT, Just wanted to let you know I know I didn't get my Radio dues in by the first of the month. Unfortunately I had to make an unplanned road trip down to Charleston SC to attend to some family business. I just got back yesterday so today I'll mail it out and I'll send some extra cash to make up for being late.
The last time I went down there I had taken Amtrak and wrote you about how awful the trip was. It wasn't fun taking a train packed full of drunken niggers on a 12 hour ride. This time I made the drive from NY to SC which takes about 13-14 hours by car. After my last trip I commented on the amount of niggers down in South Carolina. I made some new observations while down there on this trip and wanted to share some of them.
I don't want to seem like I'm bashing South Carolina because actually I really like the place a lot in spite of all the niggers. But while down there this time around it occurred to me that the culture there is really like a person with a multiple personality disorder. One personality is that of the old confederacy. You see all around you evidence of this. The Confederate flag still flies on many flagpoles and appears on bumper stickers on many cars. You see historic monuments honoring various aspects of the "war of northern aggression" as they phrase it all through the city of Charleston. The Daughters of the Confederacy is still an important institution done there. Confederate generals are still held as heros.
At the same time that you have this worship of the old Confederacy you have all kinds of Patriotic crap going on. I was down there the week of the 4th of July and American flags flew from most houses you passed as you drove down the road. On the 4th I noticed the children in the neighborhoods running around all dressed in red, white & blue. I even noticed kids with their bicycles all done up with red, white & blue streamers. Big firework displays were everywhere and it occurred to me that this is the 2nd personality. The worship of the Confederacy and the worship of America seem to go hand in hand down there despite their obvious contradictions.
Despite the worship of the Confederacy and the obsession of all things associated with the old south you see blacks integrated more into the white society down there than you do up in New York, and I thought this is the 3rd personality. Blacks now walk the streets of Charleston hand in hand with white southern girls right past those monuments to the Confederacy and no one gives them a second glance or harsh word. They live in the White neighborhoods, including the high end neighborhoods. They work side by side with the people whose trucks bear the confederate flag bumper stickers. Arson is suspected in the fire that badly burned the vacant Texas governor's mansion Sunday, according to state Fire Marshal Paul Maldanado. Investigators are studying surveillance camera images and other clues, he said. Gov. Rick Perry moved out of the 152-year-old historic home last year so that it could undergo a $10 million renovation.

The federal government moved Tuesday to address deepening concerns about tomatoes linked to roughly 150 cases of salmonella poisoning. As regulators continued to search for the source of the problem, the Food and Drug Administration cleared fresh tomatoes in Florida and California of any responsibility in the outbreak.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-to-4 Monday to ease rules for foreigners to try to stay in the US. The decision allows people in the country illegally to continue to make their case to immigration officials if their circumstances have changed.

AB 2076, by Assemblymember Felipe' Fuentes (D-Sylmar), would prohibit state agencies and local governments in California from using the federal "E-Verify" system to determine if their employees are legally eligible for work. The legislation would also discourage private employers from using the system. The bill won approval in the State Assembly by a 43-31 vote and is now in the State Senate.
According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, E-Verify has already identified 200,000 individuals trying to gain work in the United States who were not entitled, legally, to employment. The verification system is a voluntary, Internet-based program used by a growing number of employers nationwide.
