They are two seemingly disparate groups: African
Americans and Jewish Americans.
But 28 metro Detroiters -- both black and Jewish -- are uniting today for a
trip to Israel, where theyll find commonality in
honoring Detroit pastor Kenneth Flowers and Israeli musician Miri Ben-Ari in the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Fellowship of Israel and Black America, a Plymouth-based organization
founded in 2006, will hold its first awards ceremony Jan. 15, Kings birthday. The group is traveling with the Jewish Community
Relations Council of Metro Detroit.
Group members will tour Israel, including sites historically significant to
Judaism and Christianity, explore manufacturing plants and visit villages to
which more than 80,000 Ethiopian-born Jewish refugees have immigrated during
the last decade.
On Kings birthday, theyll
gather at the residence of Israeli President Shimon Peres to honor two who have
worked to increase the goodwill between the Jewish- and African-American
communities.
The Martin Luther King Israeli Award will be presented to the Rev. Flowers,
pastor of Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist
Church in Detroit, and Ben-Ari, who has been dubbed the hip-hop violinist
because of her bridge-building in the genre.
"When I was told I would be honored, I was quite humbled, and I didnt know quite what to say," said Flowers, 46, pastor
of the church for 13 years. "Many could not believe that I was speechless,
given that I am a Baptist minister. But to receive this award in Israel, the
Holy Land, an award bearing Dr. Kings name, just lets me know that God has
smiled on me."
Flowers has long linked with Jewish temples in an
attempt to recognize and celebrate the shared history of slavery and freedom
between Jewish people and African Americans.
Ben-Ari, a Grammy winner, has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z and Wyclef Jean.
Her single, "Symphony of Brotherhood," is well respected by rappers
and classical musicians alike.
Black and Jewish people have a long history of working together on civil rights
issues. Members of the Jewish community helped form the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People in 1908. African-American newspapers were
among the first in the United States to denounce Nazism. Some Jewish immigrants
found sanctuary teaching at African-American universities.
"I think the current relationship between Jews and Christians is among the
best its been," said Todd Mendel, president of
the Bloomfield Hills-based Jewish Community Relations Council of Metro Detroit.
"Theres more solidarity than ever before between
the two groups, and its been a long time in the
making.
"Youre starting to see some genuine interaction
and understanding that I dont think you saw 20 years
ago or 10 years ago," said Mendel, 42, a Birmingham resident who works as
a lawyer in downtown Detroit.
"This is an example of how breaking down a religious barrier can also help
to break down racial issues."
The Fellowship of Israel and Black America also will honor Israel and the
United States in the name of King. The Rev. Glenn Plummer, FIBA cofounder and
pastor of Ambassadors for Christ Church in Redford Township, said the United
States continues to be Israels
strongest ally. King often talked of his support of Zionism -- the resumption
of Jewish sovereignty in Israel.
While in Israel, metro Detroiters will help select a spot for a commemorative
sculpture, a symbol of brotherhood between black America and Israel. A sister
memorial is planned to be erected on U.S. soil.
"As racially polarized as metro Detroit is, its
not racially polarized for blacks and Jews," said Plummer, 52.
"Though there may be some sharp differences, we can still coexist
peacefully. And for our relationship and this awards ceremony to be in the eye
of the international community speaks volumes about us as a people."

Monday talking about Barack Obama.
Its a subject the freshman New Hampshire congressman,
and the states first Jewish congressional representative, has been addressing a

senator was still considered a longshot to upend the

Robin Gerbers new novel,
Eleanor vs. Ike, imagines what could have happened if Clintons political idol —
Eleanor Roosevelt — had run for president in 1952.
The idea is not far-fetched, Gerber says. "Eleanor was encouraged to run,
starting as early as 1940, but ultimately, she wasnt
as courageous as Hillary."
Gerber, 55, a Clinton supporter, is a lifelong Democrat and former union
lobbyist. She got the idea for the novel three years ago talking to a group
about her 2002 book, Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way.
"Someone asked me if Eleanor had ever made a mistake. It hit me like a
lightning bolt. Yes, she should have run for president, I said. I couldnt get the idea out of my head and started researching
why she hadnt run."
Eleanors reasons were both
personal and political. In 1948, three years after FDRs death, she publicly
doubted that the country was ready to elect a woman president.
And "Eleanor was deeply insecure," Gerber says. "She found all
the personal attacks on her very painful. She felt as if shed been through
enough."
As a feminist, Gerber found that frustrating and decided "since she hadnt run, I would just have to do it for her through the
novel."
In Eleanor vs. Ike (Avon original paperback, $13.95), out today, Eleanor is
drafted as the Democratic candidate after the real-life nominee, Adlai
Stevenson, dies of a heart attack at the 1952 convention.
In the novel, Eleanor faces questions of whether a woman could be commander in
chief during the Korean War, which the author finds "parallel to the
questions Hillary has to overcome. Hillary shares Eleanors doggedness in fighting for issues," but
Bill has more of Eleanors "empathic
charisma."
The novel includes fact, such as the KKK placing a $25,000 bounty on her head.
Gerber tried to make it "as historically accurate as possible," even
creating a campaign poll based on 1952 public opinion. She used assumptions and
evidence about the personal lives of Eleanor and Dwight Eisenhower: Both had
affairs; hers included a woman and later, a younger man who was her doctor.
"Its likely she was bisexual," Gerber says. "She was an
incredibly open person, capable of making great changes in her thinking."
The novel also imagines an attempted assassination, which Gerber says
underscores "politics can change on a dime."
Gerber says Clinton can win, despite placing third in Iowa, if she appeals to
hearts, not just minds. Gerber predicts a fall race between Clinton and
Republican John McCain: a woman vs. a war hero, as in her novel.

A FATHER went to a takeaway to confront staff about the way his daughter had
allegedly been treated and made a racist remark in a “raging” temper, a court
heard yesterday.
Melvyn Williams, 44, a window cleaner, of Erskine Road, Colwyn
Bay, pleaded guilty to racially-aggravated disorderly behaviour
at the Bay Grill in the town in July last year.
Williams was filmed by a CCTV camera at the food outlet as he shouted.
District Judge Andrew Shaw, sitting at Llandudno,
imposed a two-month jail term, suspended for a year.
He also ordered Williams to do 100 hours unpaid work.
He must also pay £150 compensation and £60 costs.
The judge said Williams subjected the victim “to the foulest abuse”.
He told the defendant: “You were in a raging temper.”
Defense solicitor Huw Edwards said Williams had
enjoyed a cordial relationship with the owner of the Bay Grill and had been
invited to return there since the outburst.
“He didnt believe he was receiving due concern for
the issues he was raising about the manner he felt his daughter had been treated
previously,” Mr Edwards said.
His behavior had been intemperate.

Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John Edwards clamor for "change" —
turning Sen. Hillary Clintons experience into a liability — a unique attack
unraveling years devoted to making change for the public good. They paint her
as an establishment candidate when, in fact, she is extremely well-qualified to
be president and, as a woman, would be a groundbreaking choice. That is a huge
change ["Clinton, McCain come roaring back," Times page one, Jan. 9].
Sexism trumps racism. Obama, while smart and
talented, has a far shorter track record than Clinton. His beautiful speeches
are stirring, yet surprisingly vague.I suggest that if Obama were a woman
of any race, he would not be taken seriously without a more concrete record.
Women must work harder to establish themselves. Clinton has worked hard all her
life to arrive at this historical juncture and now she is pilloried for her
experience.
Talk is cheap regarding change. Clinton has the experience to actually deliver
results. Shes not just a pretty face.

Its true that atheists are by definition godless, but its
possible to draw a subtle distinction between the two concepts. Atheism is the
absence of belief in gods; godlessness is the absence of gods and is generally
defined as not recognizing or worshipping any gods. Technically, a person could
believe in the existence of gods they dont worship. This might be rare, but the implications are
important. Godlessness need not deny the existence of gods, but it does dismiss
their importance.

Huckabees Religious Authoritarianism: Vertical Politics

Many people have expressed concern that Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee might be more of a fervent Christian Nationalist
than he has thus far let on. His oft-quoted claim that Christians must win
America for Christ is highly suggestive, but it was said a while ago and hasnt been followed up with anything quite so explicit.
Of course, there are many less explicit ways to communicate authoritarian and
theocratic principles to those who are "in the know." The right words
accompanied by a wink and a nod can not only say a lot, but can also be much
more effective than open exhortations. This seems to be the case with Huckabee, especially his repeated references to the
otherwise bizarre idea of "vertical" leadership.
Huckabee revealed some interesting views while
delivering a sermon in a church:
"When we become believers, its as
if we have signed up to be part of Gods Army, to be soldiers for Christ," Huckabee told the enthusiastic audience. ...Huckabee mixed homespun jokes into his sermon and added a
more religious tone than in his political speeches, not just quoting from the
Bible but citing specific verses and talking about the serious side of faith.
"When you give yourself to Christ, some relationships have
to go," he said. "Its no longer your life; youve signed it over." Likening service to God to
service in the military, Huckabee said "there is
suffering in the conditioning for battle" and "you obey the
orders."

A persons life is no longer their own? Christians have to "obey the
orders" in some "battle"? This makes more sense in light of his
statement that Americans are "tired of everything being horizontal — left,
right, liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican. Theyre
looking for vertical leadership that leads up, not down. He has excited a lot
of voters in this country. Lets pay respect for that. Hes a likable
person who has excited people about wanting to vote who have not voted in the
past.”
What does he mean by "horizontal" and "vertical"
leadership? These are code words: horizontal leadership means limited authority
among equals while vertical leadership means an authoritarian system with one
or few absolute leaders at the top while the rest "obey the orders"
they are given because their lives do not belong to themselves anymore.
Conservative evangelicals often talk about the need to prioritize
their vertical relationships with God first and foremost before worrying about
horizontal relationships among people. Its the
individualized "get right with God" approach of conservative
Protestantism. ...I know this is so because Ive been
present a number of times when "vertical" rhetoric -- the exact word
-- has been used in evangelical circles. Its indeed a
way of speaking one hears in many churches, part of the faith vocabulary of the
evangelical and fundamentalist subculture.

Emphasizing "vertical" leadership and "vertical"
relationships of authority is a way to promote the absolute authority of a few
over many. God is perceived as sitting at the top and deserving absolute,
unquestioning obedience; Gods representatives — priests, ministers, churches,
etc. — of course come next and have the authority to interpret Gods will,
enforce Gods commands, and ensure that no one disobey. Vertical relationships
are relationships between unequals and thats how authoritarian Christians
conceive of human society: women are not equal to men, children are not equal
to parents, employees are not equal to bosses, non-Christians are not equal to
Christians, and so forth.
Horizontal relationships are anathema to authoritarian Christians because they
imply that everyone exists on an equal playing field, that everyone is (at
least in theory) capable to having some authority, and
that no one is to be privileged. Horizontal family
relationships mean that men and women are equal partners and that children
cannot be treated as property. Horizontal political relationships mean
that politicians are answerable to voters and cannot act like they are above
the law. Horizontal economic relationships mean that workers might have a voice
in the running of a company while managers cannot take everything for
themselves.
