Older men who shack up with much younger women keep the grim reaper at bay for the human population and extend our species' lifespan, new research claims. 

Even beyond movie stars and Playboy's Hugh Hefner, there is a tendency for older men to partner with younger women, according to the study, published in the Aug. 29 edition of PLoS ONE. In less developed, traditional societies, males are about 5 to 15 years older than their female partners. In the United States and Europe, guys are an average of two years senior to their partners. 

More interesting, when old men father children, their genes seem to increase the lifespan of both sexes over evolutionary time. 

How it works 

Women often lose their reproductive capacity around age 50, but if men can still reproduce into their 70s, Darwin would say it's advantageous for males to live longer lives providing they can hook up with a woman capable of reproducing. Natural selection should favor longevity-boosting genes, which would get passed down from fathers to both sons and daughters. So women would benefit as well in future generations, the scientists say. 

Result: Over time, the older-guy-with-younger-gal lifestyle would lift the lifespan ceiling for both men and women in the next generations and so on. 

"By increasing the survival of men you have a spillover effect on women because men pass their genes to children of both sexes," said study team member Cedric Puleston, a doctoral candidate at Stanford University. 

Anthropologist Cheryl Jamison of Indiana University, who was not involved in the research, called the results "fascinating." 

Wall of death 

From an evolutionary perspective, women who can no longer reproduce are non-players, and since "it takes two," men partnered with menopausal women are also irrelevant. 

Following that idea, natural selection should select for harmful mutations that impact women after menopause. Over time, the discriminating genes would accumulate in the population causing what evolutionary biologist William Hamilton called the "wall of death," in which mortality of women spikes at the onset of menopause. 

Population records and everyday observations indicate that's not the case. Life expectancy for men and women in today's industrialized countries is 75 to 85 years, with mortality increasing gradually, not abruptly, following female menopause. 

Men matter 

To figure out whether male fertility could help explain human longevity, Shripad Tuljapurkar of Stanford University and his colleagues examined lifespan and fertility data from both men and women. 

They studied four societies thought to closely mimic lifestyles of our ancestors, including two hunter-gather groups, the Dobe !Kung of the Kalahari and the Ache of Paraguay (one of the most isolated populations in the world), as well as the Yanomamo forager-farmers and an indigenous group in Bolivia called the Tsimane. The research team also looked at farming villages in Gambia and a group of modern Canadians. 

In all six groups, women stopped having children on average by their 50s, while some men continued to reproduce. The age after which men showed no reproduction varied among the groups and included: 

Canada—Men showed fertility until 55 years old. !Kung—55 years old Gambia—75 years old Yanomamo—70 years old Ache—65 years old Tsimane—60 years old 

Mate choices 

Until now, the most popular explanation for the bounty of over-55s, called the "grandmother hypothesis," suggested women get a life extension in order to care for their children and grandchildren. 

The new findings don't contradict that hypothesis, but help explain how men give women another boost over the "wall of death." 

"I don't think the finding conflicts with the grandmother hypothesis but rather that it can be considered along with it as explanations for human longevity—there doesn't have to be a single gene or single selective factor," Jamison told LiveScience. 

But why do men choose younger mates and females prefer older men? 

"There is a lot of evidence from evolutionary psychology that men are seeking younger women and women are seeking older men," said anthropologist Martin Fieder of the University of Vienna, who was not involved in the current study. 

Cases in point: At the age of 26, Anna Nicole Smith married 89-year-old Jeremiah Howard Marshall II. And in 1995, actor Tony Randall, then 75, married and had two kids with Heather Harlan, who was 24 at the time. Last month, 90-year-old Nanu Ram Jogi from India reportedly became the world's oldest father when he announced his 21st child. 

Evolutionary psychologists argue that older men have more resources to protect and care for the family, while younger, more fertile women give their male partners better means of passing along genes. 

In a study of about 10,000 Swedish men and women, Fieder and his colleagues have found that men had the most children if they were partnered with women about six years younger than themselves. 

So the benefits of "age-defying" couples go both ways. Plus, the human species gets a boost.

Climate change is affecting Europe faster than the rest of the world and rising temperatures could transform the Mediterranean into a salty and stagnant sea, Italian experts said Wednesday.

Warmer waters and increased salinity could doom many of the sea's plant and animal species and ravage the fishing industry, warned participants at a two-day climate change conference that brought together some 2,000 scientists and officials in Rome.

"Europe and the Mediterranean are warming up faster than the rest of the world," said climatologist Filippo Giorgi. "It's a climate change hot spot, one of the areas where we actually see the change happening."

Scientists still don't know why the region is more sensitive to climate change, but Giorgi said that in the next decades, temperature increases hitting Europe during the summer months could be 40 percent to 50 percent higher than elsewhere.

Giorgi said the effects would be similar to those felt during the deadly summer of 2003, when the extraordinary heat was blamed for the deaths of tens of thousands of people in Europe and millions of dollars in agricultural losses.

"That was a one-in-a-million freak event, but in the future it will be the norm for the summer," said Giorgi, who is a top official in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N. network of 2,000 scientists.

Just three months after the Senate immigration bill met its well-deserved end, amnesty advocates in the U.S. Congress resumed their efforts. Recently, Senator Richard Durbin (D–IL) announced on the Senate floor his intention to offer the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act as an amendment to the defense authorization bill. 

The DREAM Act (S. 774) is a nightmare. It is a massive amnesty that extends to the millions of illegal aliens who entered the United States before the age of 16. The illegal alien who applies for this amnesty is immediately rewarded with "conditional" lawful permanent resident (green card) status, which can be converted to a non-conditional green card in short order. The alien can then use his newly acquired status to seek green cards for the parents who brought him in illegally in the first place. In this way, it is also a backdoor amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens who brought their children with them to the United States.

The Environmental Protection Agency will finish 24 Superfund toxic waste cleanups this year, far fewer than the average 76 completed annually during the Clinton administration.

EPA initially targeted 40 Superfund sites for completed cleanups this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. Forty cleanups were finished in fiscal 2005. Among the most common contaminants are asbestos, lead, mercury and radiation.

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, blamed the Bush administration's efforts to cut EPA spending for slowing the pace of cleanups, even though Congress ultimately sets the agency's budget.

"This funding shortfall is a direct result of President Bush's declining budget submissions over a number of years, particularly when adjusted for inflation," Dingell said in a letter Wednesday to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson.

 Saturday I drove to a small town south of lexington Kentucky to attend an anniversery of the siege of fort boonesborough by the mongloid (indian) savages and the british. fort Boonesborough was one of the first white settlements west of the appalachain mountains and was founded by daniel boone along with other frontiersmen, indian fighters and pioneers, virtually all of which were working class or even poor white folks. The hardships and horrors these people experienced are unimaginable to modern day soft and emasculated white folks. Too much conversation on your website about the 1860s war. you have a tendency to degrade the south and praise the north which causes dissension. it also raises questions that you are hostile towards the south and their effort for independence from the united states. why don't you take a reasonable position and just say both sides were full of it. most people would respect that. if the entire federal army could not change the south in 12 years of occupation, why do people with a northen viewpoint believe they can? the na pulled an essay stunt awhile back using general lee and stone mountain to promote federalism. in louisiana, mississippi, alabama and georgia, they are lower than whale shit at the bottom of the sea.

I see nothing on my website that praises the north. What I do see is certain evidence that some Northerners perhaps millions wanted to get rid of the Negroes. While the South committed the ultimate race Sin by importing tens of thousands of black inferiors that have been a monkey on our back ever since.
The south laid the groundwork for every problem we have with the Negro. In the North you had an occasional Negro in the back streets getting together with a white whore. But in the South you brought in thousands and thousands of blacks to mingle no matter what laws you had with whites. I don't pay attention to other websites. Especially most of the right wing ones who play the same losing tune over and over. Most of the right wing leaders feel they must wave the Confederate flag to keep a membership. In fact people like Duke has called many southerners people with green teeth.
Instead of telling the hard truth about wage slavery in the North and physical slavery of both blacks and poor whites in the South.
I did not invite this argument. I only respond to historical inaccuracies and personal attacks made on my self. I am not a follower. I say what I think. I write what I want to write and if someone can take it point by point and refute each point we can have dialogue. But waving their arms about the wonderful gallant south and the horrible North will get them nowhere. History is far more complicated than that.
Tens of thousands of young white farmers and factory workers were drafted on pain of prison or death to fight for the northern industrialists against the South. I never hear Southerners lamenting what happened to those men. I have a small union Cemetery within walking distance of my house. Most of the tombstones have been carted away some broken but you can still read a few inscriptions of these 18-year-old men that died in that war. When Southerners want to agree that the white working class was being screwed by both North and South we will have a basis for common action Many of these right wing leaders who have moved south l go on and on about the confederacy this and the Confederacy that but in reality they're phony as a three dollar bill and know nothing of history.
