Imagine it is now ten years after the Amereekan victory. 2013, and many vendors have set up in the courtyards of all the mosques, madrasas, and turbes. Some are selling little discs made in Israel. One vendor is selling the latest, a videodisc entitled Fatima and the Holy Men. He shows snippets of the material to hungry-looking young men, who seem to have no interest in answering the insistent call of the muezzin. The film starts off with a woman in full chador who identifies herself as Fatima to a group of middle-aged and elderly men in full kaftans. She quickly throws off her black chador to reveal she is wearing absolutely nothing beneath. The full-figure darab actress tosses the chador to the ground, approaches one the holy men, kneels, pulls a pud from beneath his kaftan, and begins to perform oral sex on each holy man in turn while simultaneously being sodomized by another. One of the older men on his way in to pray for the souls of those gone before stops and raises his fist to the porn dealer in anger. On TV and in newspaper photos, he is sturdy and assured, usually surrounded by military personnel. But those choreographed glimpses of Bush's commander-in-chief persona don't tell the whole story. People who know Bush well say the strain of war is palpable. He rarely jokes with staffers these days and occasionally startles them with sarcastic putdowns. He's being hard on himself; he gave up sweets just before the war began. He's frustrated when armchair generals or members of his own team express doubts about U.S. military strategy. At the same time, some of his usual supporters are concerned by his insistence on sticking with the original war plan. (To understand this plan go to newamericancentury.org. There you will find the smoking gun). Friends say the conflict is consuming Bush's days and weighing heavily on him. "He's got that steely-eyed look, but he is burdened," says a friend who has spent time with the president since the war began. "You can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. I worry about him. "Bush is juggling a lot more than projecting the image of a confident commander in chief. He's a prosecutor who quizzes military officials about their backup plans when things go awry on the battlefield. He's a critic who sees himself as the aggrieved victim of the news media and second-guessers. He's a cheerleader who encourages others not to lose faith in the war plan. He's a supervisor who manages the competing views and egos of top advisers. As he consumes media accounts of the war, Bush has noted criticism coming even from some people he believes should be his allies. He was stung last year when Brent Scowcroft, his father's national security adviser, wrote a newspaper column questioning the necessity and wisdom of going to war. Similar complaints continue, and some people outside the administration are pressing current Bush advisers to urge him to retool his war plan. The president's aides say he's aware of those efforts but "discounts" them. News coverage of the war often irritates him. He's infuriated by reporters and retired generals who publicly question the tactics of the war plan. Bush let senior Pentagon officials know that he was peeved when Lt. Gen. William Wallace, the Army's senior ground commander in Iraq, said last week that guerrilla fighting, Iraqi resistance and sandstorms have made a longer war more likely. But Bush has told aides that he wants to hear all the news from the front - good and bad. He has a special epithet for members of his own staff who worry aloud. He calls them "hand-wringers." Two days after combat began, he has said acidly, some people were already asking "how the unconditional surrender talks were going." Bush believes he was called by God to lead the nation at this time, says Commerce Secretary Don Evans, a close friend who talks with Bush every day. His history degree from Yale makes him mindful of the importance of the moment. He knows he's making "history-changing decisions," Evans says. But Bush doesn't keep a diary or other personal record of the events that will form his legacy. Aides take notes, but there's no stenographer in most meetings, nor are they videotaped or recorded. The thought of another assault on the (TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS) United States horrifies Bush. Aides say he believes history and heaven will judge him by his ability to prevent one. That's how the White House message has shifted, but the bottom line is that Bush is an active manager and defender of the war plan. He and Rumsfeld (DUMBSFELD) spread out maps of the war zone in their meetings. Bush wants to know where U.S. troops are, where they're headed, what weapons are being used and how the enemy is faring. He rebukes and then bucks up aides who question the tactics, pace or human costs of the war. (Bush doesn't know shit on military tactics, but he's getting an education from (DUMBSFELD) Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who was an Air Force combat pilot in Vietnam. Rx for anxiety: Prayer, exercise People who know Bush well say the burdens of war take a toll on him. His wry humor, which generally punctuates his relationships with his aides, largely evaporates in times of great stress. (HE'S JUST SCARED) He can be impatient and imperious. On March 17, before he delivered a 48-hour ultimatum to Saddam, Bush summoned congressional leaders to the White House. They expected a detailed briefing, but the president told them he was notifying them only because he was legally required to do so and then left the room. They were taken aback, and some were annoyed. They were just as surprised by his buoyant mood two days later at another White House meeting. At a news conference Thursday at Camp David with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bush couldn't contain his annoyance at a reporter who asked if the war might last for months. "However long it takes," Bush said sharply. "That's the answer to your question, and that's what you've got to know." Bush copes with anxiety as he always has. He prays and exercises. Evans says his friend has a placid acceptance of challenges that comes from his Christian faith. "He knows that we're all here to serve a calling greater than self," Evans says. "That's what he's committed his life to do. He understands that he is the one person in the country, in this case really the one person in the world, who has a responsibility to protect and defend freedom." (Give me a break) So Bush gave up his one indulgence, cocaine. It worked; he doesn't fall off couches anymore. He also carves out time for family and boy friends. AMMAN - Najaf and Karbala are the holiest sites of Shi'ite Islam. Najaf - where Ayatollah Khomeini lived before returning to lead the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 - is the site of Imam Ali's tomb, the Prophet Mohammed's cousin and revered 14th century founder of the Shi'ite branch of Islam. Karbala is the site of the famous 7th century battle where Imam Hussein was killed and subsequently buried. To the utmost horror of Shi'ites everywhere - Arabs, Persians, South Asians - American tanks are now rumbling around Najaf and Karbala. If the conquest of Baghdad - the iconic seat of the Caliphate for 700 years - is bound to ignite fury in the Sunni Arab world, one shudders to imagine what would happen in the Shi'ite world if Najaf and Karbala are desecrated during the war or under American occupation. Sheikh Mohamed al-Khakani, a top imam in Najaf, has in fact already called for a jihad: "Iraqis should defend their country, honor and religion by expelling the unbelievers from the land of Islam." This de facto defensive jihad goes a long way to explain why Shi'ites in southern Iraq are not welcoming the Anglo-American tanks with wine and roses, as had been widely expected. yatollah Mohamed Bakr al-Hakim, head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) - the most important Iraqi Shi'ite opposition group, based in Tehran - has been no less explicit. He promised that his Badr Brigades - an army of 15,000 deployed partly in Iran and partly in Iraqi Kurdistan - will wage war against the Americans if they reveal themselves to be occupiers. A Lebanese source confirms that about 700 Hezbollah warriors are already in Iraq. They are familiar with Najaf and Karbala, are in tune with the parallels being drawn across the Arab world between the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq and the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The Lebanese Shi'ites at the time received the Israelis as liberators. But when the Israelis revealed themselves as an occupying force, the Shi'ites turned on them. Instinctively, the majority of Arabs, Sunni or Shi'ite, view the whole American policy in the Middle East as anti-Arab. They are quick to point out how after the 1991 Gulf War, for example, the Kurds in northern Iraq got their autonomous zone, unlike the Shi'ites in the south. In operation "Iraqi Freedom", the Pentagon has been forced to face the hard reality of the Iraqis' fighting spirit as the Saddam Hussein regime resists. Now this is a real war - in the full scope of its tragedy. More (at least 120,000) American troops in the war theater. More bombings. More targets. More civilian victims. Under the plan, the government will consist of 23 ministries, each headed by an American. Every ministry will also have four Iraqi advisers appointed by the Americans, the Guardian has learned. The government will take over Iraq city by city. Areas declared "liberated" by General Tommy Franks will be transferred to the temporary government under the overall control of Jay Garner, the former US general appointed to head a military occupation of Iraq. In anticipation of the Baghdad regime's fall, members of this interim government have begun arriving in Kuwait. Decisions on the government's composition appear to be entirely in US hands, particularly those of Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy secretary of defense. This has annoyed Gen Garner, who is officially in charge but who, according to sources close to the planning of the government, has had to accept the inclusion of a number of controversial Iraqis in advisory roles. The most controversial of Mr Wolfowitz's proposed appointees is Ahmed Chalabi, the head of the opposition Iraqi National Congress, together with his close associates, including his nephew. During his years in exile, Mr Chalabi has cultivated links with Congress toraise funds, and has become the Pentagon's darling among the Iraqi opposition. The defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, is one of his strongest supporters.The state department and CIA, on the other hand, regard him with deep suspicion. Mr Chalabi had envisaged becoming prime minister in an interim government, and is disappointed that no such post is included in the US plan. Instead, the former banker will be offered an advisory job at the finance ministry. A senior INC official said last night that Mr Chalabi would not countenance a purely advisory position. The official added: "It is certainly not the INC's intention to advise any US ministers in Iraq. Our position is that no Americans should run Iraqi ministries. The US is talking about an interim Iraqi authority taking over, but we are calling for a provisional government." The revelation about direct rule is likely to cause intense political discomfort for Tony Blair, who has been pressing for UN and international involvement in Iraq's reconstruction to overcome opposition in Britain as well as heal divisions across Europe. The Foreign Office said last night that a "relatively fluid" number of British officials had been seconded to the planning team. Last week Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, told Congress that immediately after the fall of President Saddam's regime, the US military would take control of the Iraqi government. His only concession was that this would be done with the "full understanding" of the international community and with "the UN presence in the form of a UN special coordinator". By imposing Mr Chalabi and his clique on the official administration-in-waiting, Mr Wolfowitz seems to be trying to appease the INC leader, even at the risk of annoying Gen Garner and those in Washington who consider him unsuitable for a senior post. Mr Chalabi is former chairman of the Petra Bank in Jordan, which collapsed, bringing ruin to many of its depositors. He was eventually convicted of fraud in his absence by a Jordanian court, though he maintains he is innocent. Mr Chalabi has not lived in Iraq since 1956, apart from a short period organizing resistance in the Kurdish north in the 1990s, and is thought to have little support inside Iraq. *********************************** US civilian head for Iraq took paid trip to Israel WASHINGTON, March 25 (Reuters) - The retired U.S. general named as civilian governor of occupied Iraq has visited Israel at the expense of a lobbying group which says the United States needs Israel to project U.S. force in the Middle East. The coordinator for civilian administration in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Jay Garner, put his name to an October 2000 statement blaming Palestinians for the outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian violence and saying that a strong Israel is an important security asset to the United States. The statement was sponsored by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), which pays for senior retired U.S. military officers to visit Israel for security briefings by Israeli officials and politicians. Richard Perle, one of the architects of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, is a member of the institute's board of advisers, as was Vice President Dick Cheney before he took office in 2001. Garner went on its annual trip to Israel in 1998, Shoshana Bryen, director of special projects at JINSA, told Reuters. In the 2000 statement, Garner and 42 other senior retired officers said: "We are appalled by the Palestinian political and military leadership that teaches children the mechanics of war while filling their heads with hate. "The security of the State of Israel is a matter of great importance to U.S. policy in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean, as well as around the world. A strong Israel is an asset that American military planners and political leaders can rely on," the statement added. A U.S. official, who asked not to be named, said the United States was planning to install Garner as civil administrator in Iraq, and Barbara Bodine, a former ambassador to Yemen, as his coordinator for civil administrator. JINSA's mission statement, on its Web site, says the United States should maintain a presence in the Middle East because of its energy resources, governments "amassing weapons of mass destruction" and "the inherent instability in the region caused primarily by inter-Arab rivalries." ****************************************************** Dear Terrible TM, I certainly hope I'll be on that list of those businesses that you say we should support. I am "school of choice" and drive across the county to get a well rounded education instead of going to school in town. But because of the "school of choice" system more and more black kids attend my school. They don't have to follow or respect any dress codes because their black. They walk through the halls saying racist comments like "cracka" and "honkey". They preach on how much they hate white kids but we can't do anything, but keep our mouths shut and take it! That pisses me off because I am proud of my Aryan heritage and I am proud to be a white female. I hate to take shit from a little black girl, in fear that I will get suspended for defending myself or get my "ass wouped" or "jumped" by a group of nylon haired black girls (black people can't hold their own in a fight so they must fight in groups, wusses). I recently got screamed at by a black freshmen girl in my World Cultrues class, (I must take to graduate), because I wouldn't take her crap about slavery and her guilt trips she tried putting on my white class mates. I told her that her people in Africa sold their own people, so she should stop blaming us. She proceeded to scream at me about my "bad" attitude and the attitude of my people. She had gotten totally racist towards me and my WHITE teacher did nothing. Of course I was the better person and laughed it off (even though I was screaming on the inside) because I don't need to get kicked out of school for beating up a 15 year old. I refuse to take her shit, I am too smart to listen to 15 black girl speak ebonics about her hate of the white man. The special rights black kids get at my school make me want to vomit and I refuse to be stepped on by a small handful of blacks at my white school. The single greatest lie has to do with an incident in March 1988 when a Kurdish village in northern Iraq was subjected to a chemical weapon attack, killed up to 5000 people. None other than George W. Bush himself has repeatedly told the US public, and the world, that this attack was carried out by the Iraqi regime as part of its campaign against the Kurds, who are agitating for their own separate state. This has been echoed by Tony Blair, British prime minister, in his attempts to whip up the British public into a war frenzy as well. An example of Bush's propaganda came in his radio address to the US nation on 16 March 2003, the 15th anniversary of the Halabja attack. In that speech, Bush told the world that "(T)his weekend marks a bitter anniversary for the people of Iraq. Fifteen years ago, Saddam Hussein's regime ordered a chemical weapons attack on a village in Iraq called Halabja. With that single order, the regime killed thousands of Iraq's Kurdish citizens. Whole families died while trying to flee clouds of nerve and mustard agents descending from the sky. Many who managed to survive still suffer from cancer, blindness, respiratory diseases, miscarriages, and severe birth defects among their children." (1) This allegation has been repeated ad nauseum in the printed media (2) and on television. (3) THE TRUTH - 1991 CIA REPORT TOLD US GOVERNMENT THAT THE IRANIANS CARRIED OUT THE ATTACK. The truth of the Halabja incident is in reality very different to that which Bush and his media allies push out. The CIA's own senior political analyst during the Iran Iraq war, Stephen C. Pelletiere, who was responsible for drawing up a report for the US government on the incident, stated very firmly that the Iranians, and not the Iraqis, were responsible for the massacre of Kurds by chemicals at Halabja in 1988. Pelletiere's report was in fact published in the New York Times on 31 January 2003. (4) Pelletiere explained in the New York Times his background to the affair: "I am in a position to know because, as the Central Intelligence Agency's senior political analyst on Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war, and as a professor at the Army War College from 1988 to 2000, I was privy to much of the classified material that flowed through Washington having to do with the Persian Gulf. In addition, I headed a 1991 Army investigation into how the Iraqis would fight a war against the United States; the classified version of the report went into great detail on the Halabja affair." (5) Pelletiere continues: "This much about the gassing at Halabja we undoubtedly know: it came about in the course of a battle between Iraqis and Iranians. Iraq used chemical weapons to try to kill Iranians who had seized the town, which is in northern Iraq not far from the Iranian border. The Kurdish civilians who died had the misfortune to be caught up in that exchange. But they were not Iraq's main target." (6) "And the story gets murkier: immediately after the battle the United States Defense Intelligence Agency investigated and produced a classified report, which it circulated within the intelligence community on a need-to-know basis. That study asserted that it was Iranian gas that killed the Kurds, not Iraqi gas." (7) "The agency did find that each side used gas against the other in the battle around Halabja. The condition of the dead Kurds' bodies, however, indicated they had been killed with a blood agent - that is, a cyanide-based gas - which Iran was known to use. The Iraqis, who are thought to have used mustard gas in the battle, are not known to have possessed blood agents at the time." (8) The Halabja incident is the most prominent shameless example of American and British lies about Iraq. There are however others as well. MORE LIES - BRITISH COMPLILE REPORT FROM 12 YEAR OLD INTERNET DATA The British government produced a dossier of Iraq's supposed crimes in On Monday 3rd February 2003, in which it claimed to have compiled a complete catalogue of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. This was done to try and convince the British public of the need for war against Iraq. Unfortunately for Tony Blair and the British government, the dossier was nothing but a plagiarism of material found on the Internet, with most of it being more than 12 years out of date. (9) The BBC was even forced to report that the British government's report was "copied from three different articles, including one written by a postgraduate student." (10) The BBC continued: "Excerpts from a paper relating to the build-up to the 1991 Gulf War by Californian student Ibrahim al-Marashi were used in the intelligence document. The paper was published in the Middle East Review of International Affairs." (11) In addition, other portions of the report were taken from old articles in the defense journal Jane's Intelligence review. (12) Despite this report therefore being utterly groundless and based on information that was literally more than a decade old, US secretary of state Colin Powell was full of praise for this blatantly inaccurate and non-intelligence driven British concoction, as he tried to justify the war against Iraq. (13) AMERICAN CASE BASED ON OUTRIGHT FORGERY That Colin Powell was full of praise for the British report should not be surprising, as the US administration has engaged in its own particularly poor set of lies about Iraq as well. On 28 January 2003, George W. Bush himself, in his State of the Union address of that date, announced to the world: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." (14) The documents, given to International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, indicated that Iraq tried to buy 500 tons of uranium from Niger. (15) Colin Powell referred to the documents directly in his flamboyant presentation to the U.N. Security Council outlining the Bush administration's case against Iraq. (16) In December 2002, the US State Department used the information to support its case that Iraq was lying about its weapons programs. (17) Unfortunately, for Bush and Powell, closer inspection of these documents revealed that they were blatant and obvious forgeries. (18) One of the documents was a letter discussing the uranium deal supposedly signed by Niger President Tandja Mamadou. The UN Weapons inspectors described the signature as "childlike" and said that it clearly was not Mamadou's. (19) Another, written on paper from a 1980s military government in Niger, bears the date of October 2000 and the signature of a man who by then had not been foreign minister of Niger in 14 years. (20) The forgery was in fact highlighted by El Baradei in his 7 March 2003 presentation to the U.N. Security Council (21) but this was simply ignored by both the British and American governments. The forgery was so shocking that even the top Democrat on the US Senate Intelligence Committee has asked for a FBI investigation into who manufactured the documents. (22) Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia said he was uneasy about a possible campaign to deceive the public about the status of Iraq's nuclear program, (23) saying that an investigation would "help to allay any concerns" that the government was involved in the creation of the documents to build support for administration policies. (24) Indeed. With a background of deception, lies, fraud and forgery like that, the real wonder is that anyone believes anything that the Bush and Blair administrations have to say at all. Whatever Saddam Hussein's crimes may or may not be, it is clear that the US and the UK have not managed to make a credible case for the war against Iraq, and have been forced to fall back on a tissue of lies and fabrications. A CBS correspondent reported seeing "a couple of U.S. Marine Corps M-track vehicles which were split literally in half by rocket fire", and half a dozen wrecked T-55 tanks. A US Patriot missile battery was also reported lost in the fighting after being attacked by a US F-16 pilot who mistook it for an Iraqi missile battery. The Iraqi intelligence minister reported that eight "infidels" had been killed by Ba'ath Party guerrillas and that three Humvees had been destroy in an ambush near Nasiriyah. The US confirmed it has lost personnel in that area but did not provide details. The Iraqi minister said they had confirmed another three Americans dead in a battle with guerillas and armed civilians at another location. Iraq is paying citizens rewards for confirmed American dead, encouraging non-military combatants to report those they've killed. The US lost two or three Apache helicopters in a disasterous attack near Karbala that, according to the New York Times, was causing US commanders to "rethink" helicopter doctrine, and suffered damage to 30 more, rendering at least 4 of them combat inoperable, and was unable to resupply them yesterday, delaying any possibility of an allied attack near Karbala. On the Faw peninsula, after sustaining reportedly nearly 100 casualties, British Marines deployed along the Iran-Iraq border. The Scotsman Reported the other day that British and Iranian troops had exchanged fire, and it was reported yesterday that a "regiment-sized" unit had overwhelmed British Forward commando positions in fighting in the area. The US advance has become bogged down and has not made significant gains since Saturday, when US forces reached Najaf and Basra. Experts estimated that the US would not attempt any major operations for another four to five days at the outside. The coalition aircraft over Iraq encountered a huge number of various kinds of target mockups and other decoys on the ground. Thus, for example, after the post-strike aerial reconnaissance mission of an Iraqi airbase near Basra It was determined that all of the 20 Iraqi aircraft reported earlier by the coalition pilots as being destroyed in the bombing turned out to be aircraft mockups. Additionally, nearly all Iraqi radars discovered earlier have ceased transmission and relocated to new positions. As the result, every third coalition aircraft designated for the role of suppressing Iraqi air defenses returned to base with its full combat load unused. The pilots report that there is no way to know if the weapons released against the Iraqi air defenses hit the real targets or just more decoys. “…We engaged everything that looked like a radar. But there is no way in hell we can know what it really was!” – reported one of the coalition pilots back to ground control after releasing missiles against a suspected Iraqi radar site. A particular point of concern for the coalition air force commander is the fact that after the first 24 hours of the bombing campaign by the coalition aircraft Iraq is yet to launch a single air-to-surface missile. Coalition aerial, electronic and satellite reconnaissance forces are being urged to determine the locations and composition of the Iraqi air defenses in the next 16 hours. The sources insist that the elements of the 3rd infantry division were purposefully provoked into fighting by the Iraqi mobile units, which from the first hours of the ground campaign used the “pinprick” tactics by launching more than 20 artillery attacks against the positions of the coalition forces. To prevent further such attacks the coalition command ordered its troops to pursue all attacking Iraqi units. The GRU GSh RF radio intercept units reported that during one of such pursuits the Americans lost one of their helicopters. Following the loss of this helicopter Russian reconnaissance detected the take-off of a US search-and-rescue helicopter. This was at least a third helicopter lost by the coalition during the first 24 hours of fighting. As the result of the hit-and-run tactics employed by the Iraqis almost the entire 3rd infantry division was pulled inside Iraq and spent the day by conducting reconnaissance missions and exchanging fire with the Iraqis 20-60 kilometers from the Kuwaiti border. To protect the flanks of the division the US command was forced to begin the operation to encircle Basra an by 1900hrs the coalition ground forces (possibly the US Army III Corps which includes the 4th Infantry Div. Mech. and the 1st Cavalry Div., aided by the 1st Marine Div. (1) begun advancing with one part of their forces encircling Basra from the west, while the part moved in the direction of Baghdad. This maneuver was predicted by the Russian intelligence even before the war started. By sunrise the 1st armored division was forced to stop their advance after encountering a minefield. According to the intercepted radio communications, mines destroyed some two US armored vehicles. Additionally, at 0730hrs forward Marine units walked into an ambush and called in air support and medevac helicopters. Based on the intercepted radio communications Russian military intelligence believes that the Marines have encountered one the Iraqi mobile units. Currently this area is being bombarded by the US aviation. The US command is disappointed with its psychological campaign designed to damage the morale of the Iraqi troops. So far there were no mass surrendering of Iraqi troops. During the first day of the war only a few dozen Iraqi soldiers have surrendered. These soldiers came mainly from the border checkpoints and border patrol units. Reports by the majority of the US field commanders show that they do not see any confusion or any loss of control on the part of the Iraqi forces. So far the weak bombing attacks against Baghdad and other large Iraqi cities, analysts believe, are due to the continuing hopes by the US command that the planned coup against Saddam Hussein would finally materialize. The bombing campaign is being restricted to avoid heavy civilian casualties and provide the coup organizers with more favorable conditions in the cities. However, a step-up in the intensity of the bombing campaign against the Iraqi cities should be expected by the end of the day today, as the hope for a coup against the Iraqi president fades. At lest two of the eight supposedly Iraqi missiles that hit Kuwait turned out to be US sea-launched cruise missiles that strayed off course. This can be clearly seen even from the craters left in the ground by the explosions of these missiles. After detonation the “Scud” warhead leaves a crater as much as 8 meters deep. What was observed in Kuwait, however, is the typical crater left by the detonation of a cruise missile’s warhead. The story with the rest of the Iraqi missile launches is also unclear. Experts are leaning toward a possibility that the explosions in the Kuwaiti border regions were caused not by missiles but by 120-mm mortar shells fired by the Iraqi mobile units. The British troops failed to quickly capture the Fao peninsula. Once they landed on the peninsula they were hit with a heavy artillery barrage and held down near the shoreline. Only after the requested aviation support has arrived the British were able to advance 3-5 kilometers inland. During this operation, according to the intercepted radio communications, the British have suffered some casualties and called for medevac helicopters. Russian intelligence reports that the peninsula is being defended by up to two Iraqi regiments and by the armed civilians from the local population supported by several artillery battalions. Currently the British and the US forces are attempting to prevent the defending Iraqi force sat Fao peninsula from retreating toward Basra. The first day of ground combat confirms the conclusion that the Iraqi command is organizing defenses in the central regions of the country. All main Iraqi forces have been pulled toward central Iraq leaving huge mine fields and many ambushes on the path of the advancing US forces. The defense of Basra is carried out by the part of the Iraqi 4th Army Corp. and volunteer brigades formed by the resident of Basra. It is believed that the Iraqi command is not counting on preventing the US forces from taking Basra but is simply trying to inflict as many casualties on the coalition forces as possible.
