Laws 1941, c. 20216, P 3. ****************************************** Survivors' Lawsuit Seeks $40 Billion From U.S. for Not Bombing Auschwitz FORWARD STAFF In a bizarre addition to the Holocaust-related suits now winding their way through the courts, two German-Jewish survivors of the Auschwitz death camp are suing the American government for its failure to bomb the camp. The plaintiffs in the class-action suit, Kurt Julius Goldstein, 87, and Peter Gingold, 85, are asking for $40 billion in compensation for survivors and the descendants of the Jews killed in Auschwitz in the closing months of World War II. They claim that a decision to bomb the camp would have rescued some 400,000 Hungarian Jews who were deported there in 1944 and 1945. The suit was filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia! on January 2. Judge Emmet G. Sullivan issued a summons to the U.S. attorney general on March 8. The government has 60 days to respond. ******************************************* FORMER SKINHEAD TO BE RELEASED FROM PRISON On November 19, 2002 Kyle Brewster, who was convicted of first-degree manslaughter, is scheduled to be released from prison. Brewster, a former member of the skinhead group known as East Side White Pride, was involved in the death of Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian immigrant who was beaten to death in Southeast Portland in 1988. Brewster was one of three involved in the incident and the second to be released from prison. Ken Mieske (aka Ken Death), who was charged for the murder of Seraw is still serving time for his crime in the Oregon State Penitentiary. The first to be released was Steven Strasser, who was convicted of manslaughter, he was released in November of 1999. Following the death of Seraw, Oregon passed laws requiring police to monitor, t! rack and report bias crimes statewide. Unfortunately, the monitoring, tracking and reporting of hate crimes statistics from various law enforcement agencies around the state has often been hit and miss. Portland Police Bureau has been more diligent in their reporting than many other agencies. The Seraw case made history in civil court. The Southern Poverty Law Center with attorney Morris Dees, as its bastion of civil rights, sued neo-Nazi Tom Metzger for contributing to the death of Seraw. Metzger was sued for a $12.5 million judgment and found guilty for inciting the skinheads involved in the attack. The largest judgment ever leveled against a hate group. Parole board members made it clear any violations of his parole agreements would result in a swift revocation of his parole. His parole agreement consisted of failing to adhere to the advice of a mental health evaluator, use or possess intoxicants, associate himself with a gang member, and contacting either his defendants or! Seraw's family. Steven Stroud, from the Oregon Spotlight, said "Our research shows that Brewster doesn't currently appear to have any ties to any racist group. In fact, Brewster is more fortunate than most inmates because he has a strong family network and has secured work. Brewster has done his time according to societies punishment, he now needs to have the opportunity to assimilate back into society. Only Kyle can bring about his own future." ------------------------------ Tommy says: I hope after all I and my family have gone through for that frame up, he at least will not be a spokesman for my enemies and yours. ************************************ NOVEMBER 20, 2002 Benjamin Matthew Williams, convicted along with his brother, James Tyler Williams, last December for torching three Sacramento synagogues and an abortion clinic in 1999, was found dead in his Shasta County jail cell on November 17. Authorities have determined that Williams committed suici! de using a shaving razor. Prison officials housed Williams in a high-risk section of the jail after a failed escape attempt along with another inmate this past June. In connection with that escape, authorities convicted Williams earlier this month of attempted murder for assaulting a correction’s officer with a homemade hatchet. No deaths have been reported so far this time. "The protesters made bonfires on major highways. They broke into shops and destroyed more than 15 vehicles," a resident told Reuters by telephone. A worker at a newspaper office in the city said: "The fundamentalists burned two hotels. They then attempted to burn our office, and we had to jump the fence of the building and hide in the house of a Muslim neighbor." Rioting flared on Wednesday, initially over a newspaper report linking the name of the Prophet Mohammad to the pageant. But it quickly turned into a general protest against the December 7 event in the nearby national capital, Abuja. Irate youths armed with ston! es and clubs on Wednesday burned the Kaduna office of This Day, a leading independent daily which carried a report on Saturday that triggered the unrest. The story on Muslim protests over the staging of the pageant in Nigeria included a line that said the Prophet Mohammad would have married one of the beauty queens. But this has not appeased Muslim groups in the largely Islamic north of the country who have decreed a ban on the daily. The disturbances in Kaduna have added to controversy raging over Nigeria's staging of its biggest show business event ever. Many beauty queens had threatened boycott the pageant in Abuja to protest against the sentencing of Muslim women in northern Nigeria to death by stoning for adultery. Following assurances by the government that no one would be stoned, some 90 contestants arrived in Nigeria last week, with many voicing su! pport for the condemned women. Islamists, terming the pageant "a parade of nudity," have vowed to disrupt the event. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that the Finance and Defense ministries are finalizing the request and would forward it to the United States in the coming days.The request for guarantees on foreign bank loans would be in addition to the $2.9 m! illion in direct loans and grants that Israel receives annually from the United States, the official said.
