But even when a movie passes my standards, most of them..to be quite honest, merit only a slow yawn at best. I never bother to review them. But every once in a golden while, a movie comes along that breaks the mold and shows me what really good movie making is all about. "2012" was one such movie, and to my utter astonishment, "Avatar" is another...
"AVATAR" was written and directed by James Cameron of the "Terminator" movies. It is in 3-D, and let me tell you, there's never been a 3-D movie this advanced.. ever. I found myself literally swatting at alien bugs flying in my face! The premise is plausible and the CGI is amazing. This is one of those very rare "must see" movies. Due to its popularity, most theaters are holding it over for another week or two, though time is running out to see it in the theaters, and that would be a shame if you missed it. It's an experience of a lifetime. The only drawback is the price of a ticket: $12 bucks! But when you see how much time, effort, and obvious millions went into creating this masterpiece, you won't feel ripped off one little bit. In fact you'll think it was cheap...
The movie's premise is that an earth corporation, using contract Marines, lands on a moon named "Pandora". It's a lush, beautiful world, inhabited by tons of really beautiful.. but nasty beasties that would cheerfully eat you on sight. The corporation is there to harvest a rare mineral that's worth trillions for hi-tech applications. Trouble is, there's an indigenous humanoid population that doesn't want them digging up their "mother". That's when the fun begins. I'm not going to spoil it for you, except to say that you won't expect anything that's coming. This is a real thrill ride boys and girls; the kind of movie that leaves you stunned when it's over....There's only one adjective for Avatar, and I say it wholeheartedly; WOW...
